Waste Couture Jacket

This piece is inspired by the timeless allure of the Chanel jacket. It highlights the legacy of Chanel’s infamous jacket design, with the impact its created on fast fashion. The jacket’s silhouette juxtaposes the celebrated elegance and craftsmanship of its origin, with its diluted mass-manufactured replications in modern consumer-driven culture.

This piece was crafted from leftover fabric scraps of my previous works to create a tweed fabric. Each row was hand stitched onto a secondhand woven fabric as the base. The trim of the jacket is made of loose fabric scraps representing the waste created by fast fashion. The jacket is also reversible, exposing the raw edges of how the tweed was crafted. Its creation is a call to action for mindful consumption, and a rejection of wasteful consumerism, while still embracing the beauty, legacy, and fun, of fashion.
